  • Public transport fares will increase by 6.75% to offset the generalised rises in costs in recent years.

  • The prices of the approved passes will come into force as soon as the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility officially specifies its proposal. In the meantime, the 2023 rates will remain in effect.

  • The board of directors has appointed Manuel Valdés as the new managing director of the consortium to replace Pere Torres, who will leave the ATM after almost 8 years in the position.

Barcelona, 19 December 2023.- The ATM’s board of directors has agreed to revise the general public transport fares in the Barcelona area with a 6.75% price increase and, at the same time, maintain the 20% discount on the T-usual and T-jove passes applied by the consortium administrations. In this regard, the discounts may be increased by up to 50% if the State maintains the corresponding 30% contribution as it has done until now to benefit the most frequent travellers.

The current 2023 prices will be maintained until the official State decree

The new prices approved by the Barcelona ATM will not come into force until the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility officially announces its contribution in a decree.

Several factors have been taken into account in the general increase in fares (the first since 2020) in order to continue guaranteeing the sustainability of the system, after three years of cost containment and several improvements in the social passes.

The economic factors include the high generalised increase in prices in recent years, which has affected energy costs in particular. Since 2019, the cumulative increase in the CPI has totalled almost 15%. It is estimated that the cumulative increase will be as high as 19% in 2024. Moreover, we should also take into account the impact of Covid-19, which has caused at least two years of severe financial imbalances for operators. Furthermore, throughout this time there has also been an improvement in the services, with the renewal and expansion of the rolling stock and the technological revamping of the public transport system, entailing new associated costs.

The coverage coefficient remains highly favourable for users

The cost of the service covered by the administrations with their public contributions remains very high and favourable for users, rising from 58.7% in the last pre-pandemic year (in 2019) to the current figure of 65.5% in 2023.

Manuel Valdés, the ATM’s new managing director, replacing Pere Torres

The ATM’s board of directors has also approved the appointment of a new managing director for the consortium. Manuel Valdés, the former manager of Mobility and Infrastructures on Barcelona City Council, will replace Pere Torres as the head of the entity. Torres has held the position for almost eight years since his appointment in February 2016. The handover will take effect on 8 January 2024.

Expiry of 2023 transport tickets

The changes in fares in 2024 will confirm the expiry of the integrated passes purchased in 2023, which will remain valid until 29 February 2024.

The T-verda and T-16 passes will retain the expiry date of each ticket.

Any 2022 passes that are still valid, given the extension of their validity throughout the current year, will expire on 31st December 2023.

Exchanges of passes

Unused passes can be exchanged for ones of the same type by paying the corresponding price difference (if applicable). These exchanges can be made at different points until 31 March 2024.
