All you need to know about the rechargeable cardboard T-mobilitat

  • What has been decided?
The temporary ban on access to electric scooters and personal mobility vehicles (PMV) from 1 February for a 6-month period

    Why is the measure taken?
The temporary ban is a preventive decision regarding the safety of the users and the staff of the operating companies, which is taken on the following grounds due to the risk of:

    • Explosion and inflammability, due to battery overload, or due to a defect in the battery, from accidental knocks (vulnerable position on the scooter), as well as the possibility of a defect due to the original battery having been tampered with or altered.
    • The rapid spread of flames and the difficulty of extinguishing these types of fires, especially in a moving vehicle, increases the severity of the risk.
    • The high toxicity of the fumes produced in such fires is further grounds to consider in closed and densely occupied spaces.

What types of vehicles does it apply to?
All electric personal mobility vehicles, as defined by the DGT (*). Scooters that can reach speeds of more than 25 km/h are not considered PMVs [personal mobility vehicles] but mopeds, so these could NOT access public transport even before the ban.
(*) Vehicle with one or more wheels equipped with a single seat and powered exclusively by electric motors that can provide the vehicle with a maximum design speed of between 6 and 25 km/h. They can only be equipped with a seat if they are equipped with a self-balancing system.

Does the measure apply to all transports?
All transport that depends on the Generalitat, ATM and AMB, (Metro and Bus TMB, FGC, Rodalies Renfe, TRAM and metropolitan, night and interurban buses of AMB and Generalitat).
However, there is the possibility that certain Town Councils opts not to adopt the measure for a bus service of which it is the operator.
The measure is not applicable to private buses.

What is the geographical scope of the ban?
All of Catalonia, (Barcelona ATM, Tarragona ATM, Lleida ATM and Girona ATM).

Why are bicycles allowed on public transport, but scooters are not?

The information available so far has not produced this type of incident with a bicycle in public transport. At the same time, the higher position of the battery avoids impacts and contact with water, to which scooter batteries are exposed.

Wouldn't it be enough to force them to be folded up and prohibit them from charging?
The scooter that caught fire on the rail systems was not connected to any charging point and still caused a high-risk explosion.

Is there a specific sign for scooter parking on public roads?

Only the municipality of Barcelona will identify with a specific sign the spaces where scooters and bicycles are allowed to park around the stations. In the rest of the municipalities, scooters are allowed to be parked in bicycle parking lots.

Will there be more surveillance in station parking lots to ensure the safety of scooters parked there for hours?

No different surveillance is foreseen for scooters and PMV than for bicycles.

What is the solution for parking these vehicles at stations?
An analysis of the entire area of Barcelona has been carried out to detect if there is a lack of available parking for these vehicles at a given station. After the analysis, it can be seen that parking areas are found in the vast majority of stations, either in Bicibox format, Bicitancats or the so-called "inverted U" iron anchored to the ground.
In those (very few) stations where they have not been found, there is a short-term commitment (a matter of a few weeks) to enable them. We have also been working on finding specific solutions in outlying areas where business and industrial parks are located, such as the Zona Franca in Barcelona.

What happens when the parking area is located past the fare gate?

In this transitory period, the ban prevents access to vehicles beyond the fare gate and, therefore, could not be used.

How can I sign up for a Bicibox or Bicitancat?

To sign up, you must go to the website of Bicibox (AMB), FGC or the Town Hall where the parking area is located.

After these six months, is a total ban contemplated?
The intention is to find suitable options because we believe in an active mobility where scooters or bicycles are registered, and also in the intermodality of these vehicles with public transport. The objective is none other than to find a solution with a panel of experts that minimises the risk of situations such as an explosion.

The panel of experts will be made up of operators, administrations, fire-fighters, manufacturers, technicians and also user organisations for these electric vehicles. The aim is to minimise the risks, and to create formulas for detecting which scooters are suitable to be boarded on public transport and which are not and under what conditions.

    Who will monitor compliance?
Compliance will be monitored by the staff of the operating companies (inspection, intervention and security staff) and also the drivers, in the case of buses.
Likewise, the obligation of the measure will be reminded by public address and through the channels owned by the operators.

    Who will impose the sanctions?
In the case of non-compliance, the corresponding complaints may be made by the operators, which may lead to the opening of disciplinary proceedings and the imposition of fines of 200 euros by the competent administration on the transport service where the complaint was made.

Is it worth promoting a mandatory ITV to adapt these vehicles?

The regulations applicable to this type of vehicle are defined by the competent bodies. Nevertheless, possible measures to guarantee the safety of personal mobility vehicles in public transport will be analysed, forming a group of experts that will include members of the Department of Industry and Energy of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the fire brigade, the university and public transport operators.

How is it that it had not been regulated until now?
Until now we had not found ourselves in this high-risk situation. And the fact is that the probability is low, but the consequences of an incident in a closed space and often with a high density of people can be high, so a preventive measure has been opted for until a suitable solution is found to further minimise the risk.

  • T-jove - 30 years old/ 6 zones

    Possible recurring or awkward questions:

    • What day will the T-jove stop being sold in cardboard format?

It will no longer be sold on cardboard on 15 March.

    • I have a cardboard T-jove that I am using. When will it expire?

You will be able to use it up completely without any problems, whether purchased in 2022 or 2023.

    •  I have a cardboard T-jove that I haven't used. Can I exchange it for a T-jove in T-mobilitat?

You can use the T-jove you have throughout 2023 and then switch to the new system.

    • When will T-jove be extended to the age of 30?

People between the ages of 25 and 29, both included, will be able to start buying and travelling with the T-jove from 15 March.

    • And what does it mean that all T-jove tickets will cost the same?

It means that, from this date, there will be only one T-jove, which will cost 40 euros and which will allow you to travel through the 6 zones of the Barcelona ATM, only available in T-mobilitat. In reality, the price of the new T-jove is 80 euros, but the current 50% discount is temporarily applied.

    • Will this change in the T-jove conditions be permanent?

Yes, it is a change in the features of the T-jove (except for the 50% discount, which is temporary).

    • And how will it work in Girona, Lleida and Tarragona, if the T-jove can only be used with T-mobilitat?

T-mobilitat is a transport system promoted by the ATM of Barcelona and which currently only integrates the network of the Barcelona area. The Generalitat is promoting a measure similar to the other ATMs. In any case, the Barcelona ATM T-jove will only be valid for travel within the Barcelona ATM. Initially, within the 6 fare zones. In a few months, the zone seven will be added.

    • If I'm 30 years old, can't I travel with T-jove?

You can use it, as long as you have started using it before you turn 30. If you purchase a T-jove and start using it after your 30th birthday, you will not be travelling on the proper fare and an inspection team could give you a fine.

    • Can I only buy the T-jove in T-mobilitat?

The T-jove with these characteristics (up to 30 years and single price for the 6 zones) will only exist in the T-mobilitat model. In fact, the sale of the magnetic version of the T-jove is also set to end on 15 March in all automatic vending machines. As long as they have stocks, authorised non-automatic sales points (news agents, tobacconists...) will be able to sell the T-jove in magnetic strip card.

    • I do not want to give my personal data. How can I use T-jove?

With the new system, if you want to use the T-jove, you must sign up with T-mobilitat, as it is a personal ticket under your name. In fact, currently, with the magnetic system, your card must include your identity number.

    • And if I buy a T-jove in cardboard, is it also up to 30 and at a single price for 6 zones?

No, the new conditions and advantages approved for T-jove only apply to the T-mobilitat system. However, there may be under-25s who only travel in 1 zone and who are fine with this former mode. In any case, the T-jove in magnetic strip card will also be phased out shortly.

    • Can a cardboard T-jove be transferred to the T-mobilitat?

No. The fact that the cardboard version is no longer sold does not mean that it cannot be validated. Cardboard T-joves can continue to be validated all year.

    • If I have an unstarted 2022 T-jove cardboard, can I exchange it for a 2023 6-zone T-jove?

You can't redeem it, but you can use the T-jove you have and use it up without any problems during this 2023.

    • I bought a T-jove in 2022 and I haven't started it. Now the prices are lower - can I trade in and get the difference back, or can they exchange it for two tickets?

Unfortunately, we cannot make this refund, as the conditions and purchase prices stipulated at the time of your purchase were those that applied to you. That they have now changed does not grant the right to receive financial compensation.

    • I recently bought a T-usual because I wasn’t aware of the start date for the expansion of the under-30 T-jove. Can I redeem it?

If the T-usual has been used, no; you will have to use it up and change to the new ticket. If you have not yet started the T-usual and less than 24 hours have passed since your purchase, in the case of the T-mobilitat system, you can return it and receive a refund, or save it and use it later, as it has not been started yet, its validity period has not begun. However, remember that these tickets will expire on 15 January 2024.

    • I'm between 25 and 30 years old, what should I do to get one?

If you are a T-mobilitat user, the Jove profile will be automatically loaded onto your account and card. This will make the machines and the app detect it when you bring the card to the readers and allow you to purchase a T-jove. If you have any problems, you can check the personal area of the T-mobilitat website if the Jove profile appears and confirm that it is also loaded on your card in the support management section. If you are not a T-mobilitat user yet, you will have to sign up.

    • I'm the right age but I don't see the option to buy the T-jove.

The Jove profile should be loaded automatically on your T-mobilitat user profile, but it may not have been loaded correctly on your card. If so, contact us and we will help you.

    • My Jove profile appears to be expired, what do I do?

Contact us and we will see how we can help you.

    • I am a minor, so how can I sign up?

You need an adult (father, mother, guardian) to sign up. This adult must sign up first, and then sign you up from their personal area. Once you've signed up, the adult will be the one who has to purchase the card for you so it gets send home, as they will be responsible for managing your account. You can also do it in person, at a T-mobilitat service point. Once you have the card, you can top it up without the intervention of the adult.

    • I have a zone-1 T-jove. As the price is the same for all zones, can I use it for all 6 zones?

No, your T-jove allows you to travel in zone 1.

    • I have a zone-1 T-jove on my T-mobilitat. Can I buy a 6-zone T-jove to have it ready on reserve, while I use the one I have active?

No, you will have to exhaust the zone-1 T-jove first; after that, you can change tickets and buy a zone-6 one.

    • I take a bus where T-mobilitat does not work. How do I use it?

The entire rail and bus network of the 6 fare zone of the Barcelona ATM is now integrated in the new system and allows validation with T-mobilitat. Maybe your line was one of the last to integrate, but it should be now. If you have a problem, whether at a train station or on a bus, ask the driver or station staff for help.

    • Why are the rates set from January to June 2023? What will happen after June?

The 50% discount on certain tickets consists of 30% provided by the State and 20% by the Autonomous Communities. The state has approved (RDL 20/2022) the 30% grants for the period January-June 2023. For their part, the Autonomous Communities have approved their 20% for the entire 2023. In this sense, it will be necessary to review the fares in June 2023 and see if the State extends its part of the discount for the remaining six months of the year.

  • All tickets purchased between January 1, 2023 and January 14, 2024 will expire on April 30, 2024 and cannot be exchanged for titles of 2024, whether released or not.

T-16 and T-verda has their particular expiration.

  • If you have a free or reduced targeta rosa, or a companion pass card, you will now receive the information when AMB's social tickets are also contactless. You can continue to travel with these card as before.

If you have to buy a T-4, you can do it as before, at the metro machines or at the tobacconists.

If you want to apply for the targeta rosa or companion pass for the first time, you can go to the website: amb.cat/mobilitat at the service offices of your town hall.
For more information you can call: 900 70 00 77.

  • It was advised to acquire one ticket or another according to the discounts and conditions that were established at each time. The extension of aid and discounts by the State was not made official until December 27 with RDL 20/2022, which is why different expirations could not be announced before that date.

  • In the event of an inspection, a minimum charge of €100 will be applied.

  • The Autonomous Communities have never applied a discount to the T-casual. It is considered a less recurring ticket and is used by many who are occasional users.

The state had applied it in 2022, but in 2023 it will only be granted if the region contributes at least another 20%.

  • You might consider switching to the T-usual. From 18 trips per month (9 outbound 9 return trips) the T-usual now has a better price than the T-casual.

  • What is the metropolitan fare?
The metropolitan fare allows you to use 1-zone integrated tickets to travel by public transport between the 36 municipalities (18 in zone 1 and 18 in zone 2) that make up the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB).

Where does the metropolitan fare apply?
It only applies when you travel between the 36 municipalities that make up the AMB (the fare zone of each municipality is in brackets): Badalona (1) Badia del Vallès (2C) Barberà del Vallès (2C) Barcelona (1) Begues (2A) Castellbisbal (2B) Castelldefels (1) Cerdanyola del Vallès (2C) Cervelló (2B) Corbera de Llobregat (2B) Cornellà de Llobregat (1) Esplugues de Llobregat (1) Gavà (1) l'Hospitalet de Llobregat (1) Molins de Rei (2B) Montcada i Reixac (1) Montgat (1) La Palma de Cervelló (2B) Pallejà (2B) El Papiol (2B) El Prat de Llobregat (1) Ripollet (2C) Sant Adrià de Besòs (1) Sant Andreu de la Barca (2B) Sant Boi de Llobregat (1) Sant Climent de Llobregat (2B) Sant Cugat del Vallès (2C) Sant Feliu de Llobregat (1) Sant Joan Despí (1) Sant Just Desvern (1) Sant Vicenç dels Horts (2B) Santa Coloma de Cervelló (2B) Santa Coloma de Gramenet (1) Tiana (1) Torrelles de Llobregat (2B) Viladecans (1) https://doc.atm.cat/ca/Municipis-de-la-tarifa-metropolitana.pdf

If the origin or the end of my trip is NOT one of the 36 metropolitan municipalities, will the metropolitan fare affect me?
No, in this case it does not affect you: when travelling between any municipality of the AMB and a municipality of the fare system outside the metropolitan area, the current zoning of the system is maintained.

If I make a trip where the origin and destination are municipalities of the AMB but includes a transfer in a municipality that does not belong to the AMB, can I use a zone-1 ticket?
No, when one of the stages of the trajectory takes place in a municipality that does not belong to the AMB, the metropolitan rate does not apply. Example: for a trip from Cerdanyola Universitat to Sant Andreu de la Barca, using Rodalies de Catalunya a and transferring to the FGC in Martorell (municipality outside the AMB), the metropolitan fare does not apply, even though both the origin and the destination are metropolitan municipalities.

What tickets do the metropolitan fare apply to?
It applies to all ATM integrated tickets (except T-16), transport operator single tickets, AMB social tickets (T-rosa, T-4 and Passi acompanyant) and social tickets of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (Pensioner's card - accompanied by the Passi Pensionista or the T-Pensionista- and the T-Acompanyment). It does not apply to multi-trip tickets from operators (for example Bonotren from Rodalies de Catalunya / Renfe).

Does the metropolitan fare apply to the T-16?
No, the T-16 continues to be valid only within the child's fare zone of residence.

  • In the event of an incident during the validation (invalid ticket, illegible data...) you must contact the staff at the railway stations, the bus driver or a customer service office. They will verify the incident and provide you with a replacement card equivalent to the damage, in terms of expiry and number of trips remaining.

  • The T-16 is a free transport card from 4 to 16 years of age for the fare zone in which the child resides. You can consult more information at the T-mobilitat website.

  • Once you've started using it, you can't change it for an integrated ticket. This is established by the DOGC implementing regulations on Fares.

  • In that link you can consult the necessary documentation that you must present and where you can request your invoice. It is essential to present the original ATM transport tickets.

  • Even if you have the documentation proving the purchase or reporting the theft of a ticket, in case of loss or theft it is not possible to receive a compensation or a duplicate.
The fact that the Resident ID no. is noted on the personalised cards (T-usual, T-jove) means it is only used to prove the ownership of the person who carries it, in case a transport inspector requires it.
The magnetic stripe technology on paper format does not allow the card to be cancelled.

  • You must go to one of the subsidised T-usual points of sale. Check it out here. There are certain restrictions on the sale of the subsidised T-usual. If the system does not accept a sale on your behalf, it may be because the minimum period between one sale and the next has not passed, or the supporting certificate you submitted has expired. For other cases, tell us through the form.

  • Social tickets for the elderly or disabled are not the responsibility of the ATM. Below you will find links that may be of interest to you:

  • If you are under 16, you can travel for free with the T-16. Up to the age of 25, you can use the T-jove. If you are a member of a single-parent family, a large family or are unemployed, check out the specific integrated cards with a discount. We list them for you here.

  • The conditions of the service provided by the operating companies depend on the companies themselves and their tutelary administration (Generalitat de Catalunya for interurban services, Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona for metropolitan services or the municipality itself in the case of urban services). You can find the contact details of the integrated transport companies here.
