Barcelona, 25 July 2022.- The Barcelona ATM has closed the first half of 2022 with a total of 450,018 million journeys. This displays a clear progression towards the normal pre-pandemic travel volumes, as demand is now at 83.1% of the level recorded in the first half of 2019.

The demand in 2022 has been recovering gradually and has not yet plateaued. Hence, in relation to the figures for 2019, demand has progressed from -31.79% in January to -10.69% in June. Therefore, in June 2022, the ATM registered nearly 90% of the public transport use recorded in June 2019.

Recovery of demand in all modes of public transport

The table below shows the travel data by operator, in comparison with the same period in recent years. With an overall system-wide average of around -17% of demand, based on data compiled in June, the intercity bus of the Generalitat de Catalunya (-8%), the tram (-14%), and the Barcelona metro (-15%) have shown the greatest recovery in relation to the 2019 reference period.

Travel passes

The year 2020 began with the new fare policy, which aimed to benefit the most frequent users by lowering the price of the monthly and quarterly passes: the T-usual and T-jove passes, respectively.

The ratio of journeys using multiple-journey passes vs. those using monthly passes has changed. In 2019, that ratio was 46/13 in favour of multiple-journey travel passes. In 2020, the ratio went down to 31/29, reaching 31/27 in 2021, and finally 28/27 in 2022. In a word, the usage ratio of these two types of passes has virtually evened out.

There has also been an increase in the use of integrated travel passes with social discounts (T-jove, passes for single-parent and large families and the subsidised travel passes for unemployed people), accounting for 21% in 2022, as opposed to 16% in 2019.

The new T-mobilitat contactless validation system is gradually being implemented in terms of both the travel cards themselves and the regional scope, and has now reached the railway transport networks in fare zone 3.

In the first half of this year, there were 21.6 million passenger validations using T-mobilitat.

Mandatory use of masks

We remind all passengers that masks must still be worn on all journeys within the public transport network.
