Barcelona, 10th January 2023.- At its meeting on 19th December 2022, as a result of the explosion of an electric scooter in a carriage of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya on 17th November, the Board of Directors of the ATM decided to ask public transport operators to amend the general terms and conditions of use of their services to include a temporary ban, lasting a period of six months, on access to public transport for electric scooters and other personal electric mobility vehicles (monowheels).

This decision will prioritise the principle of preventive safety governing operators with regard to the protection of users, the staff working in the public transport services and their facilities. These personal mobility vehicles will be forbidden until a conclusion is reached as to the conditions to guarantee their safety.

Announcements and information for users

Starting on 1st February the public transport operators and the administrations responsible for their services will provide information on the temporary ban on entering their facilities and vehicles with electric scooters and monowheels (including ones that are folded up).

Regulation currently under preparation

During this six-month period a proposal will be drawn up to regulate the transport of electric scooters and other personal mobility vehicles and their safety. This work will be performed in partnership with several agents tasked with ensuring the safety of the transport system (operators, firefighters, vehicle safety institutes, etc.).

Inter-modal parking facilities

The provision of parking spaces for scooters will be promoted at railway stations and bus interchanges during this period. In this regard, the AMB (Metropolitan Area of Barcelona) has announced the adaptation of the Bicibox for electric scooters and it will also encourage the provision of parking facilities at interchanges.

Administrative penalties

Reports drawn up by the intervention teams of the public transport operators for breaches of the ban on transporting electric scooters and monowheels in vehicles and at facilities beyond the ticket barrier will result in a penalty of 200 euros.

It is also recalled that all individuals aged six and older travelling on public transport must wear a face mask.
