Public transport in the Barcelona area exceeds prepandemic demand levels by a further 3.5% and hits a peak of nearly 98 million trips in March

Cumulative validations during the first quarter of 2023 of the public transport network increased by 25% compared with last year, but are still 1.5% below the 2019 level.

Barcelona, 24 April 2023.- The Autoritat del Transport Metropolità closes the month of March with a new record of trips for the public transport network in the Barcelona area, which reaches 98 million validations and exceeds by 3.5% the pre-pandemic demand for the same month in 2019, when 95 million were registered.

As for the operators, TRAM is the one that registers the largest percentage increase in validations compared with 2019 (11.1%), followed by the interurban buses of the Government of Catalonia (8.4), Metro TMB (7.87 %) and FGC (5.49%). As for the rest of the operators, they post increases of up to 3%, although some obtain values that are still slightly below the pre-pandemic figures.

All in all, there is a strong recovery in demand from all operators if one compares the figures for March of the previous year, with respect to which 15.6 million more trips were made (up 19%).

As for the accumulated figures of the first quarter of 2023, despite not yet surpassing the 2019 figures and at 1.5% below, there is also a notable increase of 25% compared with 2022, recovering more than 52 million validations.

The graph below shows, year on year, the accumulated demand for the public transport system, expressed in millions of journeys in 12 months. Thus, during 2021 and 2022, a steady recovery can be observed until today.


 

Hence, the forecasts for the recovery of pre-pandemic demand, which has been progressive since 2020, are met.

The new contactless validation system continues to be implemented and already records more than one million validations in one working day throughout the Barcelona metropolitan transport system ATM.
