Two railway projects will coincide this summer: the renewal of the L4 underground track to guarantee a high-quality service and the connection of the tram that will affect the T4

From 26th June to 31st August, the underground network is the most efficient mobility alternative and it will be reinforced with more trains on the other lines. Shuttle bus services will also be provided to cover the affected sections. Citizens are advised to leave early and seek information on alternatives for making the journey in advance.

  • TMB will comprehensively renew 6 kilometres of track on the central section of the L4 between Bogatell and Verdaguer in a project entailing investment totalling more than 16 million euros to be undertaken between 26th June and 25th August

  • The tram track connection works will affect the entire T4 line between 26th June and 31st August, during which time the T5 and T6 lines will end their routes at the Farinera stop to guarantee the link with the L1 underground line

Two important projects for Barcelona’s public transport infrastructure will affect mobility this summer. First of all, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will comprehensively renovate 6 kilometres of track on the central section of the L4 underground line between Bogatell and Verdaguer to provide citizens with a metro service of the highest quality and efficiency. In order to renew the line, the work will be carried out between 26th June and 25th August.

Almost simultaneously, tram track connection works will take place from Glòries to Verdaguer, affecting the entire T4 tram line, which won’t provide a service along its route. Specifically, this work will take place from 26th June to 31st August.

Renovation of the L4 underground line

TMB will renovate 6 kilometres of track on the central section of the L4 underground line between Bogatell and Verdaguer to provide citizens with a metro service of the highest quality and efficiency. It’s an essential renovation that will improve the reliability of the line, reduce the number of incidents, increase comfort during journeys and, at the same time, counter the vibrations due to the use of the infrastructure. The work will require investment totalling 16.4 million euros and it will be executed in two phases between 26th June and 25th August. The first phase will leave the line without a service between Ciutadella | Vila Olímpica and Girona from 26th June to 31st July. The second phase will begin on the following day (1st August) and last until the 28th of the same month, reducing the service of the section, as it will not be operational Jaume I to Girona.

In total, six kilometres of track will be demolished and rebuilt during this project, in which 12,000 linear metres of steel rails will be installed and 475 electric weldings and about 375 aluminothermic weldings will be applied, while 18,600 anti-vibration fasteners will be installed on a platform made up of 14,000 cubic metres of concrete.

Mobility alternatives in view of the interruption to the underground service

The underground network is the most efficient mobility alternative. There are different lines around the interruption that guarantee travel combinations. TMB will therefore reinforce the service on the other underground lines with respect to the usual one in June, allowing the frequency to be increased on all the lines except the affected one. The L4 will have a frequency of around 5 minutes (the maximum possible given the circumstances of the work). It should be recalled that mobility on the beaches is partially guaranteed by means of the L2.

As a complementary service, shuttle buses will be enabled to cover the affected route during the two phases of the work with a 3 to 4 minute frequency. The maximum number of buses that can absorb the capacity of the streets will be put into service. The special bus service will be operational during the underground’s operating hours.

In addition, we recommend the regular bus lines that operate in this area, which will also be reinforced with more vehicles: 6, V19 and V21, as well as the regular lines of the AMB, the B20 and the B25, for travel between Poblenou and Urquinaona. In addition, TMB will put on a special bus service just for people with reduced mobility between Verdaguer and Joanic.

Effect on the T4 tram line due to connection works
The work on the L4 line will coincide with those set to take place on T4 of the tram line. The current work during the first phase of the connection of the tram networks, from Glòries to Verdaguer, requires the connection of the new tracks with the existing ones in Glòries. Therefore, tram line T4 will not provide a service along its route from 26th June to 31st August.

Mobility alternatives in view of the interruption to the tram service
In this case, an alternative transport plan has also been set up, which includes:

- Bus shuttle service between Glòries and Sant Adrià Station, 9 stops (Ca l’Aranyó, Pere IV, Fluvià, Selva de Mar, El Maresme, Fòrum, Campus Diagonal - Besòs, Port Fòrum, Sant Adrià Station) with the same timetable as the tram service.

- Information on alternatives:

  • Underground L1 (Glòries, Marina, Clot), Underground L2 (Clot - La Pau), Underground L4 (La Pau, Besòs, El Maresme, Selva de Mar)
  • R1 suburban train (Sant Adrià - El Clot)
  • Bus lines 7, H14, H16, V21

Lines T5 and T6 will end at the Farinera stop, thus guaranteeing the connection with Underground L1.

Citizen information campaign
The ATM will deploy an information campaign on the two interruptions affecting the integrated public transport network, mainly via digital and radio channels as well as on social media. The purpose of the campaign is to warn users of the effects on the service of both operators and redirect them to the information spaces of each operator, where details of the Alternative.
