  • The month of June exceeds by nearly 6% the level of 2019, the pre-pandemic reference year, when the maximum demand figures of this month were recorded

  • T-mobilitat exceeds one million trips per weekday and nearly a third of the total network validations are already done with the new contactless system.

Barcelona, 19 July 2023.- The Autoritat del Transport Metropolità closes a record month of June in trips on the public transport network in the Barcelona area, surpassing by nearly 6% the former maximum of 87 million validations set in June 2019, the pre-pandemic year.

As for the operators, the interurban buses of the Generalitat (DGTM) are the ones that register the highest percentage increase in validations compared to 2019 (+14.54%), followed by Tramvia (+10.38%) and Metro TMB (+9.07%), the latter recording the best June in its history with 37 million validations. As for the rest of the operators, when compared with 2019, most register increases of up to 6%, as is the case of the AMB metropolitan buses (+6.17%), urban buses (+5.96%), Rodalies de Catalunya Renfe (+5.92%) and FGC (+4.35%), thus improving on pre-pandemic figures.

All in all, there is a strong recovery in demand from all operators if one compares the figures for March of the previous year, with respect to which nearly 14 million more trips were made (up by 21.8%).

Regarding the accumulated values of the first six months of 2023 (January-June), the demand is already above the 2019 levels, (+0.7%), and there is a significant increase compared to 2022, recovering more than 92 million validations in total.

The graph below shows, year on year, the accumulated demand for the public transport system, expressed in millions of journeys in 12 months. Thus, during 2021 and 2022, a steady recovery can be observed until today. In fact, in terms of year-on-year figures for the month of June 2023 compared with July of last year, 1 billion trips are already exceeded, so the demand recovery forecasts are met and there is a clear upward trend.

T-mobilitat exceeds a million trips a day and they already account for close to a third of the total

The new contactless validation system continues to be implemented and already records more than one million validations in one working day throughout ATM, the Barcelona metropolitan transport system. In May, validations with the new contactless system approached 30 million, accounting for nearly a third of the total registered on the public transport network in the Barcelona area.
