  • Families in the rest of the zones, which represent around 100,000 cards, will gradually begin to receive the new format with no procedures involved, once the new system has been fully deployed in all 6 zones

  • The new format is more durable and resistant, and the price of duplicates falls from 35 to 4.50 euros

Barcelona, 3 March.- T-mobilitat begun this past February to distribute the new format of the T-16 pass to families residing in zones 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Barcelona ATM region. Until now, the transition of the discount pass for girls and boys from 4 to 16 to the new validation system had only been in zone 1, the densest, with around 230,000 cards. Currently, with the T-mobilitat system deployed in the railway and bus services operating in all six crowns, the T-16 can start this new stage.

The 230,000 cards in zone 1 are now T-mobilitat.

The T-16 took its first step into the T-mobilitat world before last summer, in zone 1; a few months later, practically all minors using the pass in zone 1 already have the new format, which is much more resistant and secure. In this sense, the T-16 is now on T-mobilitat for journeys in zone 1 of the metropolitan area.

These first weeks of 2023, the T-mobilitat service and information centre is finishing up on the arrangements so that the remaining families of this first stage who do not yet have the new format will receive it as soon as possible. In any case, the conventional magnetic support is still valid for travel, for those specific cases that do not yet have T-mobilitat.
100,000 more cards added

All T-16s in zones 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 have begun to be transferred to the new system. The new T-16s that have been requested since January are being manufactured in the new format, and families who are already users of the pass will gradually receive the new format at home with no procedures to be done, during the first half of 2023.

The new system and conventional cards will coexist for a few months, so children who have the old T-16 will be able to continue using it without any problems until they receive the new format.
Families with children aged 4 to 16 who do not yet have a T-16 can request one on the T-16.cat website.

Advantages of the new format

  • The card is much more durable and resistant.

  • The price of a duplicate falls from 35 to 4.5 euros, equivalent to the cost of duplicating any T-mobilitat card. Substantial change, as families ask for some 1,250 duplicates per month, more than 15,000 each year.

  • If it is lost, it will be blocked so that no one else uses it. Significant reduction in potential fraud.

  • Currently, the T-16 must be renewed every 2 years. With the new system, renewal will only be required if the card is lost or damaged.

  • In the case of online requests, the waiting time for reception at home is reduced from the current 30 days to about 10 working days.

When the T-16 user turns 16, they can continue using the card until 31 December of that same year. After that, the card will stop working and the person will have to apply for a general T-mobilitat card, since the T-16 card is exclusive to the discount pass.

More than 130,000 daily T-16 T-mobilitat validations

Currently, the new format of the T-16 records more than 130,000 daily journeys on weekdays in zone 1, which represents 20% of the total validations carried out in T-mobilitat throughout the Barcelona ATM. A figure that is expected to grow progressively with the extension to the remaining zones, and as the magnetic format of the T-16 becomes obsolete.
